AirQo 2025 Internship

AirQo (https://airqo.africa), founded at Makerere University, is dedicated to closing the gaps in air quality data in Uganda and across Africa. We build innovative software and hardware solutions with agility and speed, leveraging cloud-based technologies and open-source tools to address real-world challenges in air quality monitoring and data visualisation.

We are excited to invite applications for our 2025 internship program, offering university students the opportunity to join the AirQo team and contribute to impactful projects. This year, we are seeking interns in the following key technical areas:

• Backend Engineering: Support the development and maintenance of microservices critical to our platform’s reliability and scalability.
• TechOps (DevOps): Assist in operational excellence, ensuring system stability and providing vital backup for our technical operations team.
• Frontend Engineering: Contribute to projects such as web migrations and interactive data visualization (e.g., PM2.5 and PM10 mapping using Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service data).
• ML/AI Engineering & Data Science: Work on advanced analytics and machine learning models to derive actionable insights from air quality data.

Person Specification:

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field at Makerere University.
• Strong interest in gaining hands-on experience in one or more of the areas listed above.
• Comfortable working within agile methodologies, with good estimation and time management skills.
• Demonstrated growth mindset and motivation to improve both self and team performance.
• Ability to work remotely, with access to a functional computing device and reliable internet.
• Working knowledge in at least three (3) or more relevant technologies (e.g., modern programming languages, version control, cloud tools, data science frameworks).

Bonus: Experience or interest in data science, machine learning, DevOps, IoT, air quality, or quality assurance testing is highly valued.
