INFECTIOUS DISEASES INSTITUTE

General Summary
The African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data-Intensive Sciences (ACE) Uganda is offering six internship opportunities supported by the SHEDS project in partnership with the Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS), University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Interns will participate in real-world, data-driven health research projects while building practical skills.

Prospective interns should apply to be trained in one of the following areas;

High Performance Computing (HPC) and Software development
Mathematical modelling
Human Genomics
Natural Language Processing and Generative AI
Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities

Cleaning, organizing, and preparing health data for analysis.
Conducting statistical analyses and generating visualizations to support ongoing research.
Developing and deploying algorithms for generative AI and machine learning.
Developing pipelines for bioinformatics analysis.
Designing and implementing mathematical models for real-time disease surveillance and epidemiological forecasting.
Reviewing and summarizing relevant literature to inform project activities.
Supporting the High performance computing helpdesk.
Participating in team meetings and delivering presentations on progress.
Submitting monthly progress reports and a final internship report.
Contributing to research outputs aligned with ACE’s mission.
Academic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or be enrolled in a master’s program in a quantitative or health-related field. Applicants for mathematical modelling must have completed a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics or a related field. Applicants for NLP and generative AI must have completed a bachelors degree in computer science, statistics or a related field. Applicants for HPC or software development must have completed a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Applicants for human genomics must have completed a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry or a related field.
Person Specification
Education:
Bachelor’s degree or be enrolled in a master’s program in a quantitative or health-related field.

Desirable Skills and Attributes:
Demonstrated interest in health data science, bioinformatics, or mathematical modeling.
Willingness to learn and contribute in a multidisciplinary environment.
Plans to pursue a career in health data science or a related field.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Eligibility:
Recent graduates or final year students with a Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative or health-related field.

Demonstrated interest in one of the areas mentioned above.
A one-page research idea aligned with the desired area of application that is; software development, mathematical modelling, human genomics, generative AI, natural language processing or high-performance computing.
